While teaching in Kansas, Sensei High served as the Public Relations Committee Chairman and a member of the Technical Committee of the USA National Karate-do Federation, the National Governing Body for the sport of karate under the auspices of the U.S. Five years later, he founded the annual JKR Elite training camp, an event that has since been designated as one of two venues recognized by Kaicho Yamazaki as official JKR International Instructor Training Courses. Sensei High founded JKR Kansas in 1993 at the University of Kansas (KU), as both a karate club and a course that could be taken for credit.Īfter graduating from KU with a Master of Arts Degree in Russian and East European Studies, Sensei High opened a dojo in Lenexa, Kansas in 1994. He also concurrently trains in the Japanese sword arts of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, Mugai Ryu, and a system derived from Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu. In addition to his 7th Dan rank in Shindo Jinen Ryu, Sensei High also is a Yudansha in Yoshinkan Aikido under the International Yoshinkai Aikido Federation. Sensei High began formal martial arts training in 1965 with the late Harry Ishisaka, in the art of Aikikai Aikido, and in the art of karate with Kaicho Kiyoshi Yamazaki in 1972. He is also the Branch Chief of JKR Maryland. High is the Chairman of the Executive Council of the JKR International Yudanshakai, the governing body for JKR world-wide. In 2018, with Soke Konishi’s passing, Madame Soke asked Sensei to serve as Deputy Soke for JKR. In 2017, Soke Konishi awarded Sensei Yamazaki the title of Kaicho, making him President of Japan Karate Do Ryobu-Kai, worldwide. His travels to conduct seminars take him to many countries, and he is a sought-after instructor, not only because of the extent of his knowledge, but for his open, in-depth teaching style. In the following years, Kaicho Yamazaki has maintained a busy schedule promoting the philosophy of Shindo Jinen Ryu karate and supervising and developing Japan Karate Do Ryobu-Kai schools worldwide. He later opened a dojo in Anaheim, California and participated widely in karate demonstrations with a wide variety of other, recognized instructors. Kaicho Yamazaki moved to the United States in 1969, and he began teaching at Citrus College in Azusa, California. After graduating in 1964 with a degree in Economics, he continued training at the Ryobu-Kan, and eventually, he was asked to assist Soke Konishi in demonstrations and seminars worldwide. Kaicho Yamazaki attended Senshu University and trained with the Shotokai organization there, under the leadership of Sensei Hironishi Motonobu, a student of Soke Gichin Funakoshi, founder of Shotokan karate. In the same year he had extensive Okinawan kobudo training with Sensei Shugoro Nakazato, the current grand master of Kobayashi Shorin-Ryu, in Okinawa. In 1956, he joined Soke Yasuhiro Konishi’s Ryobu-Kan, and he received his first teaching license for karate in 1962. Kaicho Yamazaki’s martial arts training began during his childhood under his father. There are only a handful of people in the world ranked 8th dan by the JKF and Kaicho Yamazaki is the only individual living outside of Japan to reach this level. He also holds the rank of 8th dan with the Japanese Karate Federation (JKF). Kaicho Yamazaki has a lengthy and impressive martial arts resume, and he is the only person to have held the Technical Chairman position for USA Karate, the Pan America Karate Federation, and the World Karate Federation. Sensei Kiyoshi Yamazaki is the Deputy Soke and Kaicho of Japan Karate Do Ryobu-Kai.
